Decorating your home can be tough – especially when you’re on a budget! But no matter how big or small your space is, just a little bit of work can transform an empty room into a real home. The easiest way to do this? Decorating with pillows.
It’s super important to make sure that your space is somewhere that you love. That’s because a happy space can change our mood! It’s true. Scientists have found that our environment can play a big role in our mood. Which makes sense. Who wants to spend their day in a dark, depressing room when we can make our space happy, fun, and bright?
Luckily, decorating has never been easier, thanks to the internet. In the past, we’d have to haul ourselves over to the big box store, spend hours looking through shelves of stuff just to find the few gems we wanted, and then drag it all home with us. But now, with only a few clicks, we can order exactly what we need and have it arrive right at our door!
So how is the best way to decorate with throw pillows? It may seem simple, but that doesn’t mean the options are limited! We’ve got about a ton of throw pillow ideas for you to help brighten your space and make it truly reflect your personal style.
What is a throw pillow? (Also known as a decorative cushion)
Even if you’re not super familiar with throw pillows already, you’ve seen them before. They’re the cute, smaller pillows that go on your couch, your bed, your chair, or even on the patio. Normally, they’re square and somewhere between 16 and 20 inches (40 to 50 cms) in size.
But just because they’re sometimes called decorative cushions doesn’t mean you can’t touch them. They can make even the hardest couches into comfy places to lounge and chat with your friends.
(By the way, you’ve probably heard all the names out there, and that’s ok. Throw pillow, couch cushion, decorative pillow – they’re all the same thing to us!)
1. Pair Unusual Colours
Ever heard the old saying, “blue and green should never be seen?” These old-fashioned sayings should go out the window! In fashion and in your home, these rules are made to be broken.
Pairing different colours together can create a mood, like intensity, calm, or focused that you can’t get with just a single colour alone.
Red and green are traditional Christmas pairings, but what about red and blue throw pillows? Be careful – if the colours are too bold, your room might end up looking like Superman or the 4th of July (great idea if it’s July, though!)
A great tip for red and blue decorative pillows is to allow one colour to dominate the scene, and let the other colour act as a background complement.
Another way to go is to choose darker varieties – like a dark blue, instead of a bright cobalt. That will make your room a little more conservative, while still appearing fresh and energetic.
Or try something slightly different, like a purple pillow. Cool purple goes great with a bronze palette and is very chic. For a more sophisticated look, try purple and grey. It’s practical and smooth.
2. Put throw pillows on your couch
You’re probably rolling your eyes right now. Well, duh put the pillows on the couch! But hear me out. For a lot of older rooms and styles, you often see couches with old, matching pillows. You know, the ones that came with the couch about 30 years ago and are flat as a pancake now?
Those ones aren’t what I’m talking about. Ditch ‘em!
It’s ok to replace them entirely. A sofa with throw pillows that really pop can completely transform your room.
3. Make your own pillows
Ok, so this idea isn’t for everyone. Some of us have two left thumbs. But if you’re handy with a sewing machine, making your own throw pillows can be a fun challenge.
They may not look as polished as professional throw pillows, so you'll probably want to hide them when the in-laws come over. But there’s something special about something you’ve made yourself. It’s a great way to personalize a room.
To get started, you’ll need to visit the craft store to buy some supplies, including:
- Measuring tape
- Polyester or feathers for stuffing
- Any other style accessories for your design, like buttons or tassels
Sewing a throw pillow is easiest with a machine. Lots of people will sit on them, watching Netflix to chill or jumping up and down when the game is on. You get the idea. You don’t want them falling apart!
If you put a zipper on the side of your pillow, you can use it as a cover and remove it whenever you get bored or feel like a change. This will also helps make sure they’re easier to wash. The options are unlimited!
4. Have a sense of humour: Try funny pillows
Nobody likes a grouch. But even if you’ve got the best sense of humour in the world, it can be hard to get that across in your living room or bedroom. That’s where funny throw pillows come in.
Grab something with a sassy saying. “Let’s Avocuddle” or “Home is where the pants aren’t” won’t exactly make you Jerry Seinfeld, but they may get you a hearty chuckle when your friends come over.
And isn’t that what we all want, at the end of the day? Besides, as long as they have zippers, you can always swap them out and keep your material fresh.
5. Put Pillows on the Bed
I know, we’re blowing your mind here again. Throw pillows on the bed? Insanity!!
Just hold on a second.
Bed pillows are actually really complicated. The first things you’ve got on a fancy bed aren't even actually pillows, they’re called shams. First, you have your euro shams. They're the largest. Normally, they’re placed behind your bed pillows, directly against the backboard.
After that comes a standard sham, which is slightly smaller. That goes on top of the euro sham. Then you might have your actual sleeping pillows, a bolster, a neck roll, square throw pillows, and a boudoir pillow.
The end result is a little less practical for sleeping, let’s be honest. But pillows are the perfect balance of fun and elegant in your bedroom.
You don’t need to go overboard if you don’t want to, either.
Just grab a few throw pillows and put them in front of your regular bed pillows for a doable, everyday look. The great thing about this is that you can sleep on them, use them for napping, or remove them entirely at night if you prefer.
If you’re the type of person who loves their bed, you probably spend a lot of time in it. Watching Netflix, chatting with friends, or working from home on the laptop, the bed is a place of comfort. So make it your hangout place!
Mix and match prints for a more playful look.
Or stick to one colour palette for something a little more mature. It’s up to you!
6. Animal Print Throw Pillows (along with Faux Fur Throw Pillows)
Animal print is so hot this year. According to Vogue, both Tom Ford and Diane Von Furstenberg are launching animal print lines for the fall.
Even Victoria Beckham is wearing leopard print in the form of a leopard fur coat.
You may not be the biggest fan of real fur, but that’s ok! Faux fur is an awesome way to get that fun, comfy look without harming any of our furry friends.
Although your room isn’t exactly a Paris runway, home décor styles take inspiration from the clothing you see out in the world every day. And because animal prints are trending, they should definitely make a showing in your home décor wardrobe.
Animal prints and faux fur can be very busy designs, so it’s best to mix and match. Take a style tip from Bella Hadid, and pair them with more neutral accessories like tan couch pillows.
It’ll give your bedroom or living room a sophisticated, stylish look with versatility. Plus, unlike a fur coat, fur throw pillows are great for napping on. Go ahead, grab a few winks!
7. Try Euro Couch Pillows
When you’re refreshing your living room, a new pillow or three is the quickest and easiest way to bring new life. But don’t be limited by pattern or colour!
In fact, take some inspiration from the bed pillows we just described, and go large! In throw pillow land, 16 inches or 18 inches are standard sizes. They’re a great option because they’re convenient and fit just about anywhere.
But oversized pillows, like your euro shams, can add a new and exciting look to the same old couch. Go all the way up to 26 inches, if you’re really feeling crazy!
They’re more expensive, but by mixing and matching sizes your couch will grab attention right away. You can always balance out the size with more traditional patterns and colours if you want to stay relatively conservative.
8. Go for unique couch pillows
You’ve already got a stable of navy couch pillows. Maybe it’s time to let your wild side loose and shake things up a bit. If you’re really looking for flair, try something unique!
Sequin throw pillows are the latest fad. Who doesn’t have an inner child inside them who wants to play?
Sequin throw pillows are so much fun because they’re bright, sparkly, and function like giant Etch-A-Sketches. You can write messages, draw shapes, and create pictures. Even the most mature adult in the room is going to want to try it at least once.
So there you have it! With a dash of creativity, some new throw pillows can completely change the look of your room. Refresh it, bring some new colours into a space, and get ready to love your home again, every time you walk in the door!
